2014 Memorable Beer List--by CT((KL)--Part 1/3

写回顾BEER LIST的念头很简单，想了解下朋友或不同城市的人在喝什么，有什么是让人回味的。

这期清单是自己的，也当作是“顽啤主张”报纸专栏去年小总结。（连续写了40个星期后，报纸专栏今年开始会改成每两星期见报）

个人清单分成3部分--6%以下，6-9%以及9%或以上--会加上几支没在报纸专栏出现的瓶子。

The thought of writing a LIST is simply because of curiosity-- what friend's list would be, what beers people in different cities like....

This is my personal list of memorable ones from last year--since i have a weekly newspaper column--the list were published as a sort of conclusion piece for last year.( having done 40 weeks in a row---the weekly column would now be biweekly)

The beer list would be divided into 3 parts--into low/mid/high abv category....

Fortunate Islands by Modern Times
appeared in KL later part of last year, but jump right into the list. A very pleasant anytime ale.The info printed says it all--hops-wheat-tropical ---just perfect combo.
美国新贵酿坊MODERN TIMES的FORTUNATE ISLANDS，结合麦芽/啤酒花/热带水果特色的金黄啤。

Golden Perch by Yeastie Boys
Having had two other beer from Yeastie Boys which i like--this pale ale was ordered more as try out than must have--it turn out to be one fine golden ale( however--this beer which is a special brew in conjunction with the premier of the movie The Hobbit--will have a change of name and a little tweak next time it's in the market)
纽西兰YEASTIE BOYS的GOLDEN PERCH，为电影THE HOBBIT首映特酿，之后再酿的据酿酒师说会改名。

Semi-Conductor by 8Wired
For newbie who are still not really used to the hoppy taste of IPA, this one which is in between a pale ale and IPA is a nice starter--and tasty too.
纽西兰8 WIRED的SEMI-CONDUCTOR轻度IPA，介于PALE ALE和IPA之间，适合新朋友的“入门”淡啤。

Amerikaans by De Molen
The name suggested where the influence on the beer comes from--a hop influenced but still light and easy ale--had this after a heavy tasting session and it just felt so RIGHT...( *not in KL)
荷兰名牌DE MOLEN酿坊轻度淡啤AMERIKAANS，使用美国啤酒花“浸泡”的甘香金黄啤。（国外喝到）

Gueuze by Cantilion
If you like beer that has got "champagne like bubbles"--and that it must give your taste bud some Sour+ Freshness--won't go wrong with this one from Cantillion.(*not in KL)
比利时名坊CANTILION的“入门级香槟酸啤酒”GUEUZE，有类似香槟的细致气泡口感，爽口解渴。（国外喝到）

Had this one many times--it's almost like a go to beer--can have this anytime--only if it's that easily available locally..;)

Though had it once some time back bottle--if you like a pale ale that's slightly more citrusy/fruity---this is a nice one.(*not in KL)
只喝过一次--不过一直很有印象--来自英国的果香淡啤（国外喝到）

Daytime by Lagunitas
I remember telling people who came to the booth where this bottle was on sale( during a beerfest)--"try this--it's a very nice pale ale"--obviously i have nothing to do with sale or the brand--but just thought it was worth introducing to people who have not try...(*not in KL)
在一次国外啤酒节--朋友”档口”有卖--记得一直告诉找酒喝的新朋友--TRY 这支--好好喝。。：）

2014 Memorable Beer List---by KYLE(KL/US)

因为工作关系，KYLE去年开始常驻吉隆坡。
作为啤迷，又来自有很多厉害酿坊的美国，KYLE的选项自然还是以美国啤酒为主。

Kyle has been living and working in KL since last year, though he does get his beers from either Tapsbarkl/mk or ales & lagers---i guess you cant take the USA out of a man's taste for his favourite beers even if he is so far from home..:)  ---looking at the list would tell you the story..

Here's the list of memorable beers written by Kyle(some photos provided by kyle)

1)Goose Island Proprietor's BCBS, 2013, Bottle

Almond Joy.  A great addition to the GI series.

I am suspect of anyone who doesn't love toasted coconut.  Pair that in a beer with chocolate and coffee flavors and add bourbon barrel-aging to the mix, and you have yourself a real winner.  Thanks to my friend (Ryan!) for getting this to me after I searched without success for months for a bottle.  Absolutely fantastic & mind-blowing in every way you want a GI BCBS variant to be.  I hope they continue to make this for some time!

有人会不喜欢烤香椰丝吗？加上巧克力，咖啡，然后在浓厚美国威士忌桶陈年处理--绝对是赢家组合。

细微的啤酒气泡让这支黑啤中的各个成份起到均衡作用--以椰子为主的黑啤来说,这是非常出色的一支--迫不及待要等到2014年份瓶子!

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles quickly.  Very little lacing. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, coconut, cinnamon, bourbon, and wood aromas.  Taste is much the same with chocolate, toasted coconut, almond, whiskey, and vanilla/wood flavors on the finish.  Reminds me of a drinkable Almond Joy candy but without the intense sweetness.  Mild bitterness tempered by the sweetness of the coconut and chocolate notes.  The little carbonation allows the many flavors of this beer to shine while it opens up more and more as it warms.  Very impressive restraint to balance the flavors between the bourbon, toasted coconut and chocolate/roast notes.  A truly remarkable beer that puts all other coconut beers to shame.  Would drink again in a heartbeat.  Can't wait for the 2014 version!

2)Goose Island Cherry Rye BCBS, 2013, Bottle

Cherry Cordials.  My hands-down favorite of 2014.

I love Goose Island.  Yes, they are owned by A-B.  I don't care so long as they continue to make the Bourbon County stout variants.  Cherry Rye, for me at least, stands heads and shoulders above the rest:  intense cherry balanced against vanilla and wood with a strong, delicious bourbon finish.  I want another bottle... or twelve.  Definitely worth a trade!

虽然“鹅岛”已被大厂收购--不过只要酿坊继续制作不同黑啤分子就一点都没关系--这支美国威士忌桶陈年黑啤有着强烈的樱桃加香草以及木桶陈香味--非常美味--KYLE不介意还要多12支。

很均衡，喝起来就像是美味的浓缩樱桃+黑巧克力--相较上面那支--少了苦味，多点甜。重点是，樱桃味是很自然的，一点都不人工--赞！

Pours an dark black with a foamy tan head that settles quickly, much like Proprietor's.  Minor lacing upon drinking.  Smell is of dark cherries, cocoa, whiskey, and wood aromas, consistent with all of the GI variants.  Taste is much the same with a very forward dark cherry note that fades into chocolate and vanilla with some bourbon sweetness on the finish.  Tastes like a very well-made dark chocolate cherry cordial.  Versus the Proprieters, the Cherry Rye had more sweetness and very little bitterness.  Better warmer than cooler which allows the cherry to mellow and the other flavors to become more prominent.  Absolutely delicious beer with the cherry flavors less artificial tasting than any other beer I've had in this category.  Best in show!

3)The Bruery Grey Monday, 2013, Bottle

Hazelnuts. Black Tuesday > Grey Monday.

You can't go wrong with a Bruery stout.  That's especially true for their big stout varietals.  Having tried Black Tuesday in an epic beer tasting last year, I couldn't wait to try Grey Monday.  I expected it to be the highlight of the night and, while it was absolutely delicious, I still prefer Black Tuesday's depth and pronounced bourbon sweetness over Grey Monday's hazelnut characteristics.

THE BRUERY的黑啤是绝对的，特别是“大黑啤”瓶子。在试过这家大名鼎鼎的“黑色星期二”瓶子之后，这次的这支“灰色星期二”没有期待中的圆满--KYLE还是倾向黑色瓶子的显著美国威士忌香甜味。

榛果味很突出--特别是温度上升之后，再加上桶陈美国威士忌的影响--出色！

Pours moderately dark with a light tan head that disappears after a minute.  Very minor lacing upon drinking and very thick in the glass, almost syrup-like.  Smell is of roast coffee, whiskey and wood aromas with a pronounced hazelnut flavor.  Taste is more roast forward with moderate notes of hazelnut, more like a coffee blend. More balanced than expected.  Hazelnuts develop more as it warms in the glass, adding to the sweetness level with the bourbon.  Hazelnuts taste less artificial in this beer than other hazelnut varieties, perhaps due to the bourbon.

4)Mikkeller George, 2013, Bottle

Fruity.  Bourbon > Calvados barrel-aged.

After a very long day of work, I couldn't wait to get to Taps in Mont Kiara to try this bottle.  It was so delicious that I had two... in a row.  George made for a very intoxicated night & definitely delivered an intense alcoholic punch of surprising sweetness in this dark stout!

这是KYLE清单8支啤酒中，在吉隆坡喝到的两支最爱黑啤之一--在长时间工作后，KYEL喝到这支丹麦佳酿时，一口气连续喝了两支！

因为苹果白兰地桶陈处理的特色香甜--这支黑啤让KYLE欲罢不能。虽然可能用美国威士忌桶陈处理会显得更有深度，桶陈味和威士忌香甜--作为第一次尝味的白兰地桶陈黑啤--还是很美妙的一支。

Pours light dark with a light khaki head that lingers throughout.  Minor lacing upon drinking.  Thin consistency for a stout.  Smell is of fruit, no doubt due to the aging in calvados barrels, contrasted by tobacco, wood and coffee aromas.  Taste is more roast forward with moderate notes of apples with whiskey notes on the backend.  The fruit flavor is tough to pin down, but knowing it is calvados helps.  OK sweetness I love in a stout tempered by this coffee/roast notes.  Maybe it's the American in me, but I would take a bourbon-barrel aged beer over any other barrel due to the depth, wood and sweetness bourbon gives.  Still a great beer, and a first for me with calvados.

5)Prairie Bomb!, 2013, Bottle

Chilies.  Most unique flavor of the year!

I had heard quite a bit about this beer, though not too much about the pepper flavor or heat of the beer.  I was able to get my hands on one in Malaysia (thanks, Kenny!) and I couldn't believe the contrasting complexity & depth of flavor in this little (and expensive!) bottle!

这是KYLE在本地喝到的美国黑啤--之前听说过，可是没有想到的是胡椒和辣味，还有酒体的深度和复杂程度。

很明显的咖啡，巧克力和辣椒--虽然如此，还是很均衡，不是KYLE喝惯的黑啤口味--不过很有趣--期待喝另一支“海盗”！

Dark black from the bottle with a finger width of tan head.  Minor lacing throughout.  Very big aroma of coffee, chocolate and chilies.  Taste is similar with a strong coffee/roast front note and pepper heat on the back end.  The consistency of my bottle was fairly thin.  Overall, Bomb! is quite drinkable and surprisingly well-balanced despite the heat.  Very interesting contrast and unlike anything I have had before.  I can see why this is becoming a trend in beers.  Next year, I hope I can try Prairie Bomb! Pirate!

6) Toppling Goliath King Sue, 2014, On Tap

Grapefruit.  Definitely the "king" of IPAs! Having had Pseudo Sue dozens of time on tap and in the bottle, I was very eager to try the imperial ("King") version of Sue.  Enjoyed on one of my many, many trips to the taproom.  I may be biased, but TG is one of my favorite & the best breweries in the world.  If they keep making IPAs like this, I'm confident they will be on every beer nerds' list as the best too!

柚子当道--这支绝对是印度淡啤之王--试过好几次被公认为世上最好IPA之一的Pseudo Sue 之后--这“升级”版本是在KYLE心目中世上最佳酿坊Toppling Goliath的直属酒吧喝的。

很明显的CITRA啤酒花和柑橘果香味--非常顺滑--对自认是IPA痴的KYLE来说--这杯带来的满足感太大了--也证明TG这些年来一点都没退步--这家的IPA还是KYLE的最爱。

Pours with a hazy amber color very consistent with Pseudo Sue with a crisp, two-finger width head.  The head continues to linger for some time.  Great lacing as you drink.  Smells of rich citrus fruits, including lemons, limes and melon.  You can really taste the intensity of the Citra hops.  Taste is heavenly, just as I expected.  The hop bitterness is present only on the back end with fruits, lemon zest and grapefruits up front -- just like Sue but amped up significantly.  Very creamy mouth feel.  I'm an IPA nut, and King Sue was satisfying in every way I wanted with great citrus flavors and aromas.  TG is really killing it, and King Sue has proven that they haven't lost anything over the years!  They still make my favorite IPAs hands-down!

7) Half Acre Navaja, 2014, On Tap

Pineapple.  Double IPA.  What could be better?

Half Acre has a great little tap room on the North side of Chicago.  I always enjoy stopping in when I can.  The trips are made better when they have IPAs on tap.  Especially double IPAs.  Navaja was an unexpected bonus, and it was one of the best IPAs I had in 2014.  I wish I would have had more than the three I drank that day!  

酿坊在芝加哥北边有个小酒吧--这杯是去年喝到最好的IPA之一。

充满啤酒花香鲜，加上热带果香，之后是啤酒花特有的微苦。这家之前的IPA并没有很令KYLE喜爱--不过这杯完全都“击中要害”--更何况是真正“尝鲜”喝的。

Pours with a clean amber color with a bright white head.  Great lacing throughout.  Very juicy smelling and reminds me of a tropical island with pineapple, grapefruits and melon flavors.  Taste is just like the smell.  Floral sweetness from the hops on the front note with those tropical flavors mellowing to the hop bitterness and some caramel notes on the back end.  Very creamy mouth feel but with a dry finish.  I haven't loved many IPAs from Half Acre which tend to be very piney or unbalanced but Navaja really hit all the right marks for me.  I was glad to have had it fresh on tap.  Navaja really made for a perfect boozy accompaniment to a great afternoon Chicago brewery crawl!

8)Stone Enjoy By 420, 2014, On Tap

Excellent non-whale double IPA.

Normally I go for the extremes -- delicious bourbon barrel-aged stouts or intense, tropical IPA -- but you can't drink whales every day.  Stone's Enjoy By 420 made for a great little IPA that is perfectly drinkable in those sunny days at the lake on the water.  Deceptive simplicity with excellent IPA goodness!

一般来说--KYLE会选择比较疯狂啤酒--不过也不能一直都只喝鲸鱼级别的啤酒--STONE的这支就简单的美味。

虽然是双份IPA--不过没有一般双份啤那么“烈”--“赏味期限”的确是好概念--酒更是充满STONE一贯风格。上选！

Pours with a clean golden/hay color with a bright white head.  Subtle lacing.  Great nose with a mix of citrus and piney notes.  Taste is just like the smell but in reverse. Heavy pine notes give way to tropical flavors.  Very interesting but pleasant contrast.  Very creamy mouth feel but with a drier finish.  It's a double IPA but doesn't drink as intensely as others.  I love the concept and the beer.  I know there are many variants now, but Enjoy By is definitely worth seeking out and trying.  A very well-done beer with great Stone flavors.  Tough to beat!

2014 Memorable Beer List--by Ray Chia( Singapore)

RAY是在新加坡和朋友喝CRAFT时，他和当时还是女朋友的VALENCIA以及友人都在同一家瓶子店，结果大家围在一起分享啤酒认识的。

他说从没想过要写自己喜欢的啤酒清单--这算是第一次。。。

Ray is a Singaporean friend first known through a sharing session at THIRSTY bottle shop in S'pore, then, he was still single with the craft loving--now Mrs Chia, Valencia among a group of beer geeks.Strangers became beer geek friends .

This is his first article about memorable beers in his own words:-(with almost all photos provided too)

Never thought I would compile a beer list till fellow beer geek, Tai, made the request to do so. So here it goes.

The most memorable beer I have had in 2014 was during my trip to Seattle in August. My friends, fiancée and I did a road trip, heading north, towards Oregon, stopping at Bend and Portland, before crossing the border to Canada and finally ending in Vancouver Island.

去年最有印象啤酒是在美国“跑路”的时候喝到的，当时和未婚妻以及朋友们一起去了美国几个地方，最后到了加拿大。

The “beercation” was planned around the Seattle International Beerfest, and we were extremely pumped to be able to sample brews from around the area. There were too many brews for us to sample and some even ran out before we could try them. The craft beer scene has definitely kicked off well in this part of America.

这个“啤酒跑路假期”是以西雅图国际啤酒节为中心点，要尝味的啤酒真的太多，美国CRAFT文化不是盖的。

In Seattle, needless to say, my fiancée, now wife, and me, were blown away at the varieties of craft brew available in the local supermarket. An average 6 packs would cost around US$6 to US$10. In Singapore, S$8 would likely get you a regular IPA, go figure.

在西雅图，单只看到超级市场的啤酒类别选择，大家简直被震慑了。。更何况还没聊美国和新加坡的价格差别。。。 

Alright enough ranting, let’s get on with the beer.

1. Fremont Bourbon Abominable Winter Ale (2013) at Chuck’s Hop Shop.

Chuck, who owns Chuck’s Hop Shop, obviously, gave me a taster when I asked him what I should buy back to Singapore since I can’t buy all these excellent beer back (I wish I could!), and POW! Lovingly referred to by Fremonters as the B-BOMB, this bourbon barrel-aged version of Winter Ale (American Strong Ale), has a warm, rich caramel-ly notes of the bourbon. Mild hops, but definitely dark and roasty and chocolatey malt flavours. He said this is one of his favourite beers and that he bought the entire batch when it was released. My biggest regret is that I only bought one bottle back to Singapore!

CHUCK‘S的老板--CHUCK在以拼盘式不同小杯开场后，介绍了这支桶陈处理过的美式烈啤，老板说这是个人最爱，当时一发行就买了整套--RAY现在最后悔的是只带了一瓶回新加坡。 

2. Russian River Pliny the Elder Double India Pale Ale on tap at Horse Brass Pub

The first stop when we arrived at Portland after checking into our AirBNB was Horse Brass Pub, recommended by Meng Chao from Brewers’ Craft and Smith Street Taps. And boy, is this a proper pub! 59 beers on tap! You probably need an entire weekend to sample them all! As we only have a couple of hours, I head straight to the Holy Grail – Russian River’s Pliny the Elder. My, oh my, hands down THE double IPA to die for, until something else comes along to take its place, that is. Everything about this DIPA is balanced. On the nose, aromatics from the hops, freshness, fruity, grassy, notes of pine cones, citrus peel, maybe some mild toffee and biscuit. On the palate, bitter, sweet, malty, grapefruit, crisp, super flavourful, perfectly balanced. Definitely a beer on anyone’s must drink list.

新加坡撞意啤酒业者朋友MENG CHAO推荐的酒吧--59个啤酒泵不同选择---时间有限,也只能选择性尝味.当然包括了大名鼎鼎的"苏联河"---RAY 觉得是双份印度淡啤中最均衡，最让人倾心--是“必喝”之啤。

3. Cascade Brewing’s Oblique Black/White Coffee Stout at Cascade Brewing Barrel House

Cascade Brewing Barrel House was our third stop after Lucky Labrador Brewing Co. and Hair of The Dog brewery and tasting room in Portland. Lucky Labrador was ok and HOTD was great. We were rather disappointed that all bottles for sale at HOTD were sold out and we can only sample the ones on tap, which were all very good. 

这家是“幸运拉布拉多”和“狗毛”之后才去的。“狗毛”酿坊让人遗憾的是--能让人购买的瓶子都卖光了--只能喝上了啤酒泵的--酒--当然是佳酿。

Then we moved on to Cascade Brewing Barrel House (CBBH), was a bit hesitant as they specialized in Sours but was pleasantly surprised that I actually like sours! But the one brew that stood out for me was the Oblique Black/White Coffee Stout, I cannot remember if it’s Bourbon barrel aged but it should be. When it was first poured I thought they had gave us the wrong beer but as it turns out, looks can be deceiving. The Oblique B/W Stout looks nothing like a dark colour brew, until you taste it. Some call it an American strong ale, American Stout, Coffee Stout, Blonde Stout, etc. It pours a rich golden amber colour, notes of coffee, chocolate, cocoa. Tastes crisp, coffee, good medium smooth body a well-balanced carbonation. A bit of bready pale male with creamy soft palate and dark spicy finish. I will drink this anytime.

去这家时候有点迟疑--因为是以“酸啤酒”为主--不过RAY很惊喜的发现原来自己也喜欢酸味的--不过，最让RAY有印象的是这支美式黑啤--外表看来不太像STOUT--不过，美味均衡--让RAY任何时候都想喝。

4. Hair of the Dog Brewing Co. Fred Batch 93

As mentioned before, we had the brews on tap at HOTD and it was fantastic. This bottle was uncovered later on during the same trip at a bottle in Portland. Most of the brews we tasted at HOTD tasting room were generally strong ales, hence, a sweeter palate. Notes of aromatic hops, sweet citrus and malty. This American Strong Ale tastes malty, meady, raisins, caramel, and turns to a bitter fruit finish a touch of sour. I am sure other batches will yield different taste profile and will be hoping to get my hands on any of them for a tasting.

这是离开“狗毛”酿坊之后，在其他地方发掘到的瓶子--跟之前在酿坊喝到的拼盘尝味杯子啤酒口味稍微偏甜不同--这支美式烈啤余韵带点酸味--RAY觉得不同期酿的FRED会有不同味道--期待可以再尝味其他瓶子。

5. Goose Island Beer Co. Bourbon County Stout (2013) from Las Vegas

Thanks to the good cousin, I finally got to taste the much-lauded Bourbon County Brand Stout (BCBS). Expectations were high and it definitely did not disappoint. This American Double/Imperial Stout pours a dark brown colour with a fizzy light brown head. Notes of vanilla, oak, bourbon, liquorice and roasted malt. This excellent beer is meant to be savoured SLOWLY. Take a sip, close your eyes and let it linger between the walls of your mouth, breath in slightly and gently let it slide down your throat. Perfect.

终于喝到了盛名在外的黑啤---期望高不过一点也没让人失望--让人赞叹的慢尝啤酒--喝一口--闭上眼睛--让酒体散发--慢慢化入喉咙。。。完美。

以上是RAY去年最爱的5支佳酿--是喝过蛮多好啤酒--不过这5支是瞬间想到的--老土说句--喝酒伙伴是美好时光的主因--下次喝酒时--你要叫谁？

There you have it, the top five beers of 2014 for me. To be honest, there are a lot more other good beers I have tasted over this past year and these five are kind of what came to mind instantly. All in all, as cliché as it sounds, it is always the company that makes these beer tasting moments memorable. So next time, when you have the urge to try some beer, who you gonna call? J

WEEK 40--YOKOHAMA craft-spotting

横滨是感觉舒适的港都。

来东京总是要往横滨跑跑，就算不为找啤酒喝，纯粹走走看看无无聊聊也是乐事。

这次约了“东京喝啤酒人”部落客的NEIL一起，目标为主攻美国啤酒的ANTENNA AMERICA和个性化的THRASH ZONE，也因为晚上跟日本酿酒师朋友约了在东京一家吧见面，这次在横滨只去了两家。

不过，贵精不贵多，两家已够让人眉开眼笑。

绝对推荐去东京的朋友给横滨至少一天时间，放慢脚步也好，追逐啤酒也行，横滨都适合。

This is sort of the concluding piece of the recent Tokyo bar-hop trip,

Yokohama is very close to Tokyo---even if it's not for chasing beer--it's a port city i enjoy literally doing nothing---just walking or lazy around the port/park area in a sunny autumn day is reason enough to take the half hour train ride...

The Yokohama beer tasting session were plan ahead with Neil of 'Tokyo Beer Drinker"blog---as we have another appointment back in Tokyo with a brewer friend at another bar---the trip in Yokohama is all about 2 places---Antenna America( which focus on US brew) and Thrash Zone( a metal music bar).
